What are New Year’s resolutions?

Simply put, New Year's resolutions are promises we make for our well-being.

This is usually made at the beginning of the year.

It could be to improve our mental health, physical health, food habits, learn a new language, etc.

When and How did they originate?

It all originated 4000 Years ago!

Incredible right?

In the city of Babylon, ancient Mesopotamia the new year's resolutions began.

Why are they important?

New Year's resolutions are important because,

  • They make us feel more responsible towards our goals.

  • They help us keep a check on our health.

  • They give us a chance for deeper self-introspection.

  • They can help us in finding our purpose eventually!

What are the top 20 best new year resolutions?

This is the juiciest part of the blog post.

We have divided the goals as per the age groups for convenience.

For Children:

Parents can help encourage their children,

  • By reminding them to clean up their toys by putting them where they belong.

  • By making the children try new foods. Especially all different colors of vegetables. This can make sure that their diet is taken care of.

  • Let your children know that it's a good habit to clear the table after eating.

  • This is to promote kindness in the rare diseases and chronic illness communities. Let your children know that they can always try to be friendly to kids who may have a hard time making friends. They can do this by talking with them and inviting them to join activities.

For Adults:

5) Exercise.

We all get lazy at times. Don’t we?

We are obsessed with having things our way. Everything that we need comes easy to us these days. The internet era has undoubtedly impacted our lives to an unimaginable extent.

Still, we must take time out every day for exercise.

Start small. You can start with just 15 minutes of brisk walking daily.

Here are the benefits of exercise.

6) Journaling.

Journaling is the best place to go if you are working on managing your emotions better.

This also helps you practice mindfulness and set measurable goals.

We all need that one place where we can be our true selves, without judgments.

Write down anything and everything that you feel. Unbiased. Plan your day.

Track your mood.

Journaling boosts creativity and paves way for self-discovery.

7) Help a stranger.

Should you really look for a reason to be kind? Regardless of whatever stage of life you are in, remember this. There is always someone waiting for you to be helped.

8) Face your fears.

Do something that you always feared to do. It could be swimming, car driving, or trying your favorite adventure sport. There is absolutely no reason why you should be delaying it more.

9) Read that one book that you always postponed reading.

Favorite books of all time. Best-sellers of all time. Books like “The Secret”, and

“The Alchemist”, “Atomic Habits” and “The Secret” might probably be lying on your bookshelf.

Pick those up and read. Reading helps you have a better understanding of yourself.

10) Volunteer.

Check out the possible Non-Government Organizations near your locality. Try to work for a cause. Sow the seeds of kindness to make the world a better place to live in.

11) Donate.

Not the money always. It’s the old clothes that you don’t wear anymore. Old books that you don’t read or don’t need. Give them away. That only makes space for better things to come.

12) Have a digital declutter every once in a while.

Keep your mobiles and laptops free from clutter.

13) Travel to that one favorite place.

Travel helps us connect better with nature. It helps you in making new friends too. Appreciate the beauty of nature! Something that we fail to do often.

14) Practice gratitude.

Starting today, write 3 things that you are grateful for every day.

It’s gratitude that decides your altitude. You will only end up having more.

15) Learn a new language.

16) Keep your inner child happy.

Find no reason to be happy! Be silly at times, be true, and be you!

17) Eat healthy.

Try to say ‘No’ to junk or chips often. Eating healthy helps you in being calm.

18) Sleep better.

Turn off using your phones and laptops at least 2 hours before you sleep. They help you sleep better. Have a proper 6-8 hours of undisturbed sleep every day.

19) Learn to apologize.

Keeping your ego and apologizing is one of the greatest skills.

Apologize when you are wrong. It can make wonders in your relationships!

20) Judge less, love more!

To put it simply, live and let live.’

Remember, we do not have the power to rule others' lives.

We can only be kind at times! Others need not essentially fit into our ideologies.

Remember, in life, there is no right or wrong formula. You either win or you learn.

Why do New Year's resolutions fail?

  • They are not specific.

  • They are not measurable.

  • They are not documented.

  • You simply don’t take action.

Here is a whole blog post on why new year's resolutions fail.
